Curriculum

 

We want children to become independent, determined and effective learners. We do everything possible to ensure that our children become life-long learners and to continue their learning outside of school.

 

Our curriculum uses the national curriculum to ensure that every child develops the learning steps defined within that documentation, but we have developed a more expansive approach to its delivery that ensures our children receive a wide range of experiences and opportunities to develop their knowledge, skills and attributes in ways that will guarantee learning is relevant and poignant. We ensure that learning at Queniborough broadens the aspirations, values and opportunities for every child as they grow and develop.

 

Using a planned theme-based curriculum which is broad and balanced, we help pupils to experience a well-rounded education but equally we see Literacy, Maths, Science and Computing skills as the means to success that will enable all children to access the wider curriculum. We aim to maximise the potential within foundation subjects (e.g. History, geography, Art, Music & PE) using carefully selected themes. We focus on key learning skills which reflect the needs of children in our 21st century society.

 

The needs and abilities of all pupils are addressed within lessons ensuring that the level of challenge, questioning and differentiation allow all pupils to achieve and make progress. Some children may require extra support which may be within the classroom or through small group interventions.

Reading and Phonics                                                                                           

 

At Queniborough we strive to encourage a lifelong love of books and reading. Children learn to read through the Letters and Sounds phonics scheme which builds phonic knowledge leading to blending of sounds and developing early reading skills. These skills are the starting point to becoming fluent readers.  We want all children to enjoy sharing books with parents, staff and other children as well as  reading independently. Although we don't follow a set reading scheme, we have a wide range of texts that are organised progressively into colour bands allowing children to read books at an appropriate level.  We encourage children to visit their local library and participate in events like 'World Book Day'.

 

 

 

Maths Calculation Policies

 

In Maths, we follow a sequence of steps to teach the skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.These begin with informal and mental methods and build towards more formal methods of calculation. Click on the links to view the calculation policies.
